This update will guide you through what to expect, the new features introduced, and some tips for navigating this early gameplay experience.

The Initial Phase of the PTR

The first two days of the PTR are dedicated to testing the leveling system, and this is crucial for developers to collect data on how players experience leveling from 1 to 50, as well as from 50 to the new cap of 60. A significant change that players will notice is the absence of any gear boosts or experience boosts during this period. Players are essentially testing the game from scratch, which has led to some confusion in global chat. Many players were asking, “Where’s the booster?” It’s essential to understand that this phase is about providing valuable feedback rather than rushing through levels.

Character Creation and Class Overview

One of the exciting additions in this PTR is the revamped character creation screen. Each class now features a slick animation that highlights its unique playstyle. For this season, we have six classes to choose from, with the new Spiritborn class displayed (though it remains unplayable for this PTR phase). This new feature allows players to better understand the classes before committing, which is a welcome change.

Leveling System Overhaul

With the new Season, the maximum level cap has been reduced to 60 from 100, which streamlines the leveling experience significantly. For example, as a Necromancer, the new pathways let me skip unnecessary points, focusing instead on the abilities that define my playstyle. This change aims to reduce the frustration of spending points on skills that are not directly useful.

New Difficulty Modes and World Tiers

Upon entering the game, players will find new difficulty modes labeled as World Tiers 5, 6, 7, and 8. The first tier is relatively irrelevant, while Tier 2 is a solid choice for early XP boosts. It’s worth noting that players will face tougher enemies in the higher tiers, making it essential to choose a World Tier that matches their current capabilities. I found that World Tier 3 (Expert) provides a fair challenge while still allowing for enjoyable gameplay.

Itemization Changes

The itemization system has seen a significant overhaul as well. Ancestral items, once the standard, have now been replaced by more rare drops, available starting in World Tier 5. This change aims to create a more rewarding loot experience and encourages players to push into higher difficulty levels for better rewards.

Quality of Life Improvements

The PTR introduces several quality-of-life updates that enhance the overall gameplay experience. Keybinds and settings have been reset, so players should review and adjust their configurations. The stash system has expanded to include more tabs for better organization, and players can now easily swap cosmetics from anywhere in the game.

Early Leveling Experience

In the early leveling stages, players will primarily engage in Hell Tide events for XP. Unfortunately, Infernal Hordes, which were a major source of XP in Season 5, are currently disabled due to known issues, which means players will have to adapt their strategies. As players progress, Nightmare Dungeons become available, but the new looking-for-group system makes this process smoother, allowing players to quickly form parties for efficient leveling.

Notable Leveling Strategies

An interesting exploit emerged during the PTR testing where one player achieved a miraculous 1 to 60 level increase in just 20 minutes. This involved leveraging strongholds with the help of high-level friends to repeatedly hand in quests for XP. While this was an unintended consequence of the game mechanics, it highlights how players can sometimes find creative solutions to accelerate their progression.
