Texans UDFA tracker and superlatives for 2024 class

After the 2024 NFL Draft, the Texans added just six undrafted free agents.A third of the cla s was linebackers with the addition of Max Tooley and Tarique Barnes. Twin receivers Jadon and Jaxon Janke made up another third of the cla s. Lastly, Houston made additions at defensive tackle with Pheldarius Payne and running back with British Brooks. The Texans' UDFA cla s compared to the rest of the NFL, according to the consensus 2024 NFL Big Board.Texans' UDFA tracker and superlatives for 2024 cla s Player Position College British Brooks RB North Carolina Jadon Janke WR South Dakota State Jaxon Janke WR South Dakota State Pheldarius Payne DL Virginia Tech Max Tooley LB BYU Tarique Barnes LB IllinoisHere are the Andre Burakovsky Jersey most important immediate UDFA signings, biggest sleepers and future investments for the Texans:Most important: LBMax TooleyTooley isnt your typical rookie as hell turn 26 this year, is married and has completed a full-time mi sion in London, England. Tooley has been at BYU since 2018 and played in 58 games. Hes played in 12-plus games in four of the past five seasons. In 2023 he put up an impre sive 92 tackles with five going for a lo s. The prior season he picked off three pa ses and recorded two for touchdowns in only seven games. Hes recorded an interception in five consecutive season seasons. The Texans are thin at the linebacker position. Houston has starters in Christian Harris and Azeez Al-Shaair. Behind that Aaron Ness Jersey duo they have depth pieces in Henry TooToo, Jacob Phillips and now their three rookies Tooley, Barnes and sixth-round draft pick Jamal Hill. The Texans have Neville Hewitt, Jake Hansen and DelShawn Phillips at the linebacker position as well but theyre predominantly special teamers.Tooley is fearle s in the face of pulling offensive linemen and taking on their blocks. He delivers a punch whether playing pre s in coverage or meeting tight ends and offensive linemen in the trenches. Tooley is smart in coverage with fluid movement. To make the 53-man roster hell need to stay off the ground and fix his i sue with mi sed tackles.Despite the late addition of bodies at the linebacker position, the Texans are lacking in top-end depth. with two starting linebackers. After their starters of Harris and Al-Shaair, only TooToo remains before an open competition for the next top backup. Tooley should factor into the mix with Jacob Phillips and fellow rookies Hill and Barnes for the top backup position with TooToo. It wouldnt be a surprise if Tooley made the 53-man roster and one of the spots on the two-deep depth chart at linebacker.TEXANS DRAFT: Sleeper: DL Pheldarius PaynePheldarius Payne played in 14 games at Nebraska in 2020 and 2021 before he mi sed all of the 2022 season with an Achilles injury. In 2023, he played at Virginia Tech and moved to defensive tackle after previously playing on the edge for Nebraska. Nicklas Backstrom Jersey He had a breakout year in 2023 in which he played in 13 games and recorded 10 tackles-for-lo s to go with four sacks and 31 tackles.Teams have prospects they like early in the draft with pivot prospects for later. The Texans may have liked Brandon Dorlus earlier in the draft but werent able to select him. They could have gone into the draft with Payne circled as a pivot to Dorlus. Dorlus was selected by the Falcons with pick No. 109. Houston signed Payne as an undrafted free agent. The players each have experience playing on the edge and the interior with both being hit with the tweener label. Dorlus and Payne have similar measurements and timings. Measurable Payne Dorlus Height 6'2.5" 6'3" Weight 286 lbs 283 lbs 40-yard dash 4.87 s 4.85 s 10-yard split 1.65 s 1.68 s Arms 33" 33"The Texans could view Payne as a developmental long-term replacement to Denico Autry who is an older veteran on the roster with similar versatility to play inside and outside on the defensive line. Paynes not ready to factor into the mix at a deep position currently but he flashes NFL movement skills. Hes shown the ability to drop in coverage, rush off the edge and penetrate instantly from the interior. He has tools that the Texans could develop over the coming years.Paynes superpower is his get-off which he combines with a quick side step and violent slap. Paynes agility and motor to keep working to the whistle is difficult for offensive linemen to remain in front. Paynes not ready to contribute right now but in a couple of years, he could provide an immense return on investment as an undrafted prospect if he continues to develop on the Texans practice squad while taking NFL coaching and learning from talented veterans.MORE TEXANS:Future investments: WRsJadon Janke and Jaxon JankeJadon and Jaxon Janke are twin receivers out of South Dakota State. Despite being twins their games arent identical. They're both bigger-bodied slot receivers that could catch on at the NFL level. The Texans didn Jakub Vrana Jersey t draft a receiver in a deep and talented cla s but the depth at the position may have pushed the Janke brothers out of the draft and into the free agency market. It would be a shock if either of the Janke brothers made the with Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, John Metchie III, Noah Brown, Robert Woods and Steven Sims currently on the depth chart. Diggs, Collins, Brown, Woods and Sims are all in the final year of their contract. The Texans proactively looked to find future talent at the position without spending draft capital.Jadon lacks ideal speed but can easily find space versus zone coverages. He elevates with ease, displays body manipulation in the air and shows boundary awarene s. Jadon catches the ball naturally with soft hands. His effort and succe s as a blocker are severely lacking and he can easily be altered off his route path.Jaxon has more shake and quickne s to his game than his brother Jadon. They each earn yards after catch but in different methods. Jadon creates mostly with power and balance whereas Jaxon finds the extra yards with his use of agility. While both are springy, Jaxons vertical came in five inches higher than his brothers at 38 inches. Jaxon also displays a knack for running up Alexander Alexeyev Jersey on defensive backs toes, getting them to open their hips and then cutting against the way they open. Neither brother is great as a blocker but Jaxon gives more effort and sustains better. The Texans have created a good environment for the brothers where they can come in, learn, train and develop in comfort with their twin along for the journey and no immediate stre s to compete for a 53-man roster. Theres just no place on the roster at receiver for the Texans currently. However, both of them should find a place on the practice squad together.Just like with Payne and most likely undrafted linebacker Barnes, the Jankes should all find homes on the practice squad. Barnes could see time on the active roster in 2024, where Payne and the Jankes are seeds planted for the future that the Texans will spend a couple of years nourishing to see how they grow.
